Linear and Rotary Actuators: What Is the Difference?

As you can guess, the world of hydraulics is pretty diverse and complex. Sometimes parts and components seem quite similar to each other, but usually, there are key differences between them which result in different applications for each.

One example of products that frequently confuse people are rotary and linear actuators. Both belong to the cylinder product group, both use hydraulic power to create motion and both can be used in similar applications.

However, there’s one major difference between them, which is the direction of movement they use. After receiving a direct current sent by a hydraulic power source, linear actuators drive the connected shaft in a back-and-forth motion. It makes them a perfect tool for lifting, dropping, sliding, adjusting, tilting, pushing, and pulling.

Rotary actuators move rotationally, and they keep rotating in the same direction as long as needed. Another feature they have is the ability to rotate under any angle, from 90 to 360 degrees. It allows them to effectively power heavy machinery and to be used for mixing, dumping, and turning over.

If to dig deeper, the internal structure of hydraulic actuators is also different. A linear actuator consists of a motor and a gear axle thread, while a rotary one has a more complex structure, which includes hollow, cylindrical chambers, stationary barriers, and a central shaft,

At WEITAI, we produce a wide range of both types of hydraulic actuators - rotary and linear. Our rotary actuators include standard series and customized ones. They offer the following features:

• High torque even with compact configurations
• Constant torque during full-angle rotation
• Compatibility with a variety of diameters
• Hollow shaft with zero backlashes
• Zero maintenance
• Any degree of rotation
• Interchangeability with Helac, HKS and Moveco
If you’re interested in purchasing WEITAI hydraulic rotary actuators, please message us, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
